辞 (cí) is a formal verb covering resignation, dismissal, declining, and taking leave. In everyday usage, its specific meanings are expressed by compounds: use 辞职 for resigning, 辞退 for firing, and 告辞 for formal leave-taking. 辞 alone is more literary and can sound old-fashioned for these actions.
