Definition
达赖喇嘛 is a Tibetan spiritual leader and the head of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism. The term is a transliteration from Mongolian/Tibetan, and in the PRC context it carries significant political connotations, as the 14th Dalai Lama is viewed by the Chinese government as a separatist figure. Use of the term in Chinese media often reflects official stances, and learners should be aware of the sensitivity.
