Definition
退回 (tuì huí) covers both 'to return an item' (transitive) and 'to go back/retreat' (intransitive). For returning purchases, 退 (tuì) is more common in speech; 退还 (tuì huán) is used for borrowed items. For going back, 返回 (fǎn huí) is more formal, and 后退 (hòu tuì) specifically means 'step back'.
