Definition
退步 (tuì bù) has two meanings: to regress in ability/performance, and to make a concession. For the concession sense, it contrasts with 余地 (yú dì 'leeway'): 退步 is the verb 'to step back', while 余地 is the noun 'room to maneuver' — you make a 退步 to create 余地.
