适应 means to adapt or get used to a new situation, environment, or condition — it focuses on the process of adjusting oneself. Unlike 适合 (to suit, be suitable for), which describes a static match, 适应 implies an active change over time. It also differs from 迁就 (to accommodate others), which involves yielding to someone else's needs.
