适用 (shì yòng) means 'applicable' and is used for rules, methods, or conditions that can be applied to a specific situation. It is more formal and technical than 合适 (hé shì 'suitable'), which is everyday and can describe people, clothes, etc. 适用 often appears with 于 (to) as in '适用于'.
