Definition
选修 (xuǎn xiū) means 'to take (a course) as an elective' — it specifically refers to choosing a class that is not required. Unlike 选择 (xuǎn zé), which is the general verb 'to choose, to select' for any option, 选修 is only used for academic courses and implies the course is optional.
