Definition
遗失 (yí shī) is a formal verb for losing a physical object (e.g., keys, documents) — it often implies the item might be recovered (as in lost-and-found). It is more formal than 丢失 (diū shī), the everyday word for misplacing something. Unlike 失去 (shī qù), which can be used for abstract loss (a job, a loved one), 遗失 is limited to concrete items.
