Definition
鉴 is a formal/literary verb with several related senses: it can mean 'to examine carefully or appraise' (as in 鉴定, 鉴赏), 'to take as a warning or lesson' (as in 引以为鉴, 前车之鉴), and 'to peruse' (polite usage in letter-writing, e.g. 台鉴). The character originally referred to a bronze mirror, so the verb carries the nuance of 'holding up a mirror to something' for insight. Although 鉴 also appears as a noun in compounds (e.g. 鉴宝 'treasure appraisal'), its primary use at HSK 7 is as a verb in written or formal contexts.
