Definition
难过 (nán guò) means ‘sad, sorrowful’ or ‘unwell, uncomfortable’ (physical), and also ‘hard’ for life circumstances. Unlike 难 (nán), which describes a task as ‘difficult to do’, 难过 describes a person’s emotional or physical state. Compared to 难受 (nán shòu), 难受 emphasizes stronger physical discomfort or emotional pain, while 难过 is broader for sadness and adversity.
