靶子 (bǎzi) specifically refers to a concrete or figurative target — a physical shooting target or a person/thing that is the object of criticism, jokes, or attacks. It contrasts with 目标 (mùbiāo), which is an abstract goal or aim, and 对象 (duìxiàng), which can mean the object of research/criticism but also a romantic partner. Use 靶子 when something is literally being aimed at or singled out for attack.
