Definition
鞠 is a literary verb meaning 'to rear' or 'to bring up', seen in classical texts. In modern Chinese it appears almost exclusively in the compound 鞠躬 (to bow), where 鞠 carries the verb meaning and 躬 is the object. You may also see it in the separable form 鞠个躬 (to make a bow). As a standalone verb it is rare and formal.
