Definition
须要 is a formal auxiliary verb meaning 'must' or 'have to', used in written or formal speech to express necessity. It is slightly less forceful than 必须 and is always followed by a verb. Unlike 需要 (which means 'to need' and can take a noun object), 须要 is strictly modal and cannot be followed by a noun.
