顽强 (wán qiáng) describes a tenacious, indomitable spirit that refuses to give in to difficulty — it is positive and often used for will, vitality, or perseverance. 坚强 (jiān qiáng) is similar but focuses more on inner strength and firmness of character; 顽固 (wán gù) is its negative counterpart, meaning stubborn in a pigheaded way.
