Definition
领养 (lǐng yǎng) means 'to adopt' a child or pet through a formal, legal process. 收养 (shōu yǎng) is broader: it can also mean taking in and caring for an elderly person, and may be less formal. For adopting a child, 领养 is the more precise legal term.
