Definition
驾临 is an extremely formal and honorific verb meaning 'to come / be present (of a distinguished guest)'. It originates from courtly language — 驾 ('chariot, your carriage') is an honorific prefix, and 临 means 'to arrive'. In modern Chinese, it appears in formal invitations and ceremonial announcements (e.g. 敬请驾临 'respectfully request the honor of your presence'), and sometimes in teasing among friends. It is never used for oneself; only to refer to or address a superior or guest of honor.
