默 (mò) is a bound morpheme — it cannot stand alone as a word. It appears in compounds with two main ranges of meaning: 'silent, tacit' (as in 沉默 'silent', 默认 'default / tacit agreement', 默哀 'stand in silent tribute') and 'write from memory' (as in 默写 'reproduce text from memory'). The second sense is typical in school settings where students recite or write texts without looking at the source.
