Comparing 根据 and 据
Both 据 and 根据 mean "according to." 据 is used directly before a verb phrase (often someone saying or thinking), while 根据 is followed by a noun phrase, such as someone's statement or viewpoint. Note that 根据 cannot directly precede a verb phrase the way 据 does.

根据 + Person + 的 + Noun Phrase
