Comparing 要 and 想

要 can be followed directly by a noun to mean 'want' something, especially when ordering or buying. 想, on the other hand, is almost always followed by a verb, meaning 'would like to do' something. So 要 + noun is fine, but 想 + noun is not.

When expressing desires, 要 with a noun sounds very direct and is common in restaurants, while using 想 with a verb is softer and more polite for actions. Tone of voice matters with 要, but it’s not rude in context.

Structure

Subj. + 要 + Noun
This pattern is for 'wanting' a thing; 想 cannot take a noun object.
