Expressing actions in progress with 在

Use 在 (or 正在) before a verb to express that an action is in progress. 正在 emphasizes the action is happening right at this very moment.

Structure

Subj. + 在 + Verb + Obj.
Subj. + 正在 + Verb + Obj.
emphasis on the immediacy of the action

Examples

  • 看书。
    Tā zài kàn shū.
    She is reading.
  • 妈妈打电话。
    Mā ma zài dǎ diàn huà.
    Mom is making a phone call.
  • 阿姨正在打扫我们的房间。
    Ā yí zhèng zài dǎ sǎo wǒ men de fáng jiān.
    The cleaning lady is cleaning our room right now.
  • 昨天晚上七点,我们吃饭。
    Zuó tiān wǎn shàng qī diǎn, wǒ men zài chī fàn.
    Yesterday at 7pm, we were eating dinner.
  • 我们正在上课,请你等一会儿。
    Wǒ men zhèng zài shàng kè, qǐng nǐ děng yí huì r.
    We are in class right now; please wait a moment.
