Expressing "due to…" with 由于

由于 is placed before the cause to mean "due to" or "because of," with the effect following. In written Chinese 所以 is often omitted, but it can be used optionally to connect the clauses.

  • 由于工作关系,我经常去北京。
    Yóuyú gōngzuò guānxi, wǒ jīngcháng qù Běijīng.
    I often go to Beijing for my work.
  • 由于意见不一致,两位老板吵了起来。
    Yóuyú yìjiàn bù yīzhì, liǎng wèi lǎobǎn chǎo le qǐlái.
    Due to differing opinions, the two bosses started to argue.
  • 由于天气原因,所有的航班都要推迟起飞。
    Yóuyú tiānqì yuányīn, suǒyǒu de hángbān dōu yào tuīchí qǐfēi.
    All departing flights have been postponed due to weather conditions.
  • 由于地址没写清楚,所以这封信没有寄出去。
    Yóuyú dìzhǐ méi xiě qīngchu, suǒyǐ zhè fēng xìn méiyǒu jì chūqù.
    Due to the address not being clearly written, this letter was not sent.
  • 由于采用了新技术,工厂的效率大大提高。
    Yóuyú cǎiyòng le xīn jìshù, gōngchǎng de xiàolǜ dàdà tígāo.
    Owing to the use of new technology, the efficiency of the factory has improved significantly.
