Expressing "multiples" with 倍

To say that one thing is a certain number of times as much as another, use 倍 after the number in the pattern A + 是 + B + 的 + Number + 倍. This structure works for direct comparisons of size, quantity, or degree. A common mistake is forgetting 的 or placing 倍 before the number.

Examples

  • 他现在的工资是两年前的四倍。
    Tā xiànzài de gōngzī shì liǎng nián qián de sì bèi .
    His current salary is four times what it was two years ago.
  • 公司现在的规模是十年前的五倍。
    Gōngsī xiànzài de guīmó shì shí nián qián de wǔ bèi .
    The company's current scope is five times what it was 10 years ago.
  • 今年的产量是去年的两倍。
    Jīnnián de chǎnliàng shì qùnián de liǎng bèi .
    This year's output is twice as much as last year's.
