Expressing "the other" with 另外
Use 另外 (or 另 before a singular noun) to talk about 'the other' or 'another' item(s) from a group that has been split into parts. Place it before the number, measure word, and noun, and remember that 另 is usually for singular and often appears in the fixed phrase 另一个.
Structure
另外 + Number + Measure Word + Noun
另 + 一 + Measure Word + Noun
used for singular nouns; 一 can sometimes be omitted when clear from context (e.g. 另一半)
Examples
- 我有两个手机，一个是小米，另一个是iPhone。Wǒ yǒu liǎng gè shǒu jī, yí gè shì xiǎo mǐ, lìng yí gè shì iPhone.I have two cell phones. One is a Xiaomi, and the other is an iPhone.
- 她有两套房子，一套自己住，另一套租给别人了。Tā yǒu liǎng tào fáng zi, yí tào zì jǐ zhù, lìng yí tào zū gěi bié rén le.She has two houses. She lives in one and rents the other one to other people.
- 我买了三张票，一张是我的，另外两张是给朋友的。Wǒ mǎi le sān zhāng piào, yì zhāng shì wǒ de, lìng wài liǎng zhāng shì gěi péng you de.I bought three tickets. One is for myself, and the other two are for my friends.
- 这个蛋糕一半是你的，另一半是妹妹的。Zhè ge dàn gāo yí bàn shì nǐ de, lìng yí bàn shì mèi mei de.Half of this cake is yours. The other half is your little sister's.
- 他的两个女儿一个嫁给了法国人，另一个嫁给了德国人。Tā de liǎng gè nǚ ér yí gè jià gěi le fǎ guó rén, lìng yí gè jià gěi le dé guó rén.He has two daughters, one of which married a French guy and the other married a German guy.
