Turning adjectives into adverbs
To turn an adjective into an adverb, place the structural particle 地 (de) after the adjective and before the verb. This pattern is similar to adding '-ly' in English. The most common pitfall is confusing 地 with 的, which is used for possession or attributive modification.

- 你要努力地学习。Nǐ yào nǔlì de xuéxí.You must study hard.
- 他顺利地通过考试了。tā shùnlì de tōngguò kǎoshì le.He passed the exam successfully.
- 他认真地对我说:“我喜欢你。“Tā rènzhēn de duì wǒ shuō: "wǒ xǐhuan nǐ."In all seriousness, he said to me: "I like you."
- 老师生气地看着我们。Lǎoshī shēngqì de kàn zhe wǒmen.The teacher is looking at us angrily.
- 大家都在教室里安安静静地看书。Dàjiā dōu zài jiàoshì lǐ ānān-jìngjìng de kàn shū.Everybody is reading quietly in the classroom.
