Definition
上 (shàng) has two common HSK 1 uses: as a noun meaning 'on, above' (position) and as a verb meaning 'to go up, get on (a vehicle), attend (class)'. As a noun, it contrasts with 上面 (shàng miàn), which is more specific for 'on top of' or 'above-mentioned' in texts. As a verb, it's the everyday word for boarding transport, unlike 爬 (pá) 'to climb' (using hands/feet on a surface).
