Definition
上将 (shàng jiàng) is the highest active general/admiral rank in the People's Liberation Army, equivalent to a four-star general, admiral, or air chief marshal depending on the service branch. It can be used as a title before the surname (上将刘) or as a noun referring to the rank itself. Unlike English, which has distinct terms per branch, Chinese uses 上将军衔 for all branches.
