Definition
上进 (shàng jìn) means 'to strive for self-improvement' and emphasizes personal ambition and the desire to better oneself, often used in 上进心 (drive for self-improvement). Unlike 进步 (jìn bù), which is a general word for any improvement or progress, 上进 focuses on the inner motivation to improve. It is similar to 向上 (xiàng shàng) but 向上 is broader and can also mean 'upward' physically.
