Definition
之中 (zhī zhōng) is a formal/literary noun meaning 'inside, among, during'. It always follows a noun or noun phrase (e.g., 人群之中 'among the crowd'), unlike 里面 (lǐ miàn, HSK2) which is the everyday spoken word for 'inside' and can stand alone. 之中 is more abstract and written than 里面, and is interchangeable with 中 (zhōng, HSK3) in many patterns, but 之中 sounds slightly more literary.
