之外 is a suffix meaning 'beyond', 'apart from', or 'in addition to'. It is most commonly used in the pattern 除了…之外 (chúle…zhīwài), which means 'except for…' or 'besides…'. It can also follow a noun or location to mean 'outside of' or 'beyond' a certain scope. As a suffix, it cannot stand alone — it must attach to a preceding word or phrase.
