介于 (jiè yú) is a formal verb meaning 'to lie between', always paired with 之间 to form '介于A和B之间'. Unlike 之间 (a noun meaning 'between'), 介于 is the verb that describes the state of being situated between two points. Use 介于 when you need a verb; use 之间 when you need a noun.
