Definition
何必 (hé bì) is a rhetorical adverb asking 'why bother?', implying that an action is unnecessary or pointless. Unlike 不必 (bù bì), which states 'need not' as a fact, or 为何 (wèi hé), which asks a neutral 'why?', 何必 carries a tone of gentle persuasion or mild frustration. It is less intense than 何苦 (hé kǔ 'why suffer'), which emphasizes that the trouble is not worthwhile.
