做梦 is the everyday verb for 'to dream' — both literally during sleep and figuratively for an unrealistic fantasy. Unlike 梦 (mèng), which is a noun (a dream), 做梦 is always a verb (to dream). It contrasts with 梦想 (mèng xiǎng), which means to dream of a serious, cherished aspiration, not a pipe dream.
