Definition
停学 is a separable verb (离合词) meaning 'to suspend or stop schooling'. It can be used in two main ways: (1) the school suspends a student (often temporarily as punishment or for health reasons) — e.g. 被学校停了学 ('was suspended by the school'); (2) the student voluntarily stops attending school, either permanently (drop out) or for a period (take a leave). When splitting, the object 学 separates from 停 and can take 了, 过, or a duration between them: 停了半年学 ('stopped school for half a year').
