Definition
减刑 is a legal term meaning 'to reduce or commute a prison sentence'. It is a separable verb (离合词): the verb 减 (reduce) and the object 刑 (sentence) can be separated when inserting a measure word, duration, or result, e.g. 减了两年刑 ('had the sentence reduced by two years'). The person whose sentence is reduced is typically introduced with 给 or 把: 给他减刑 ('reduce his sentence').
