Definition
击破 is a resultative verb (r.v.) formed by the verb 击 (strike) and the complement 破 (broken/defeated). It literally means 'to strike and break' (like smashing a window), and figuratively means 'to defeat an enemy or opponent' (often used in military or competitive contexts). Because the result is built into the compound, 击破 already carries a perfective meaning – you cannot add 了 after 击破 without sounding redundant (unlike 打破 which is more flexible). Use it for targeted destruction or decisive defeat.
