千克 (qiān kè) is the formal, standard term for 'kilogram', used in science, official documents, and written language. In everyday conversation, 公斤 (gōng jīn) is much more common for the same weight. Use 千克 when you need the precise SI unit; use 公斤 for daily shopping and casual talk.
