压缩 (yā suō) means 'to compress' — to reduce the volume or size of something (files, air, materials) by applying pressure. Unlike 压迫 (yā pò, 'oppress/constrict') or 挤压 (jǐ yā, 'squeeze'), 压缩 focuses on making something smaller or more compact, and is the standard term for data compression.
