Definition
发作 (fāzuò) refers to a latent condition or emotion suddenly flaring up — illness, temper, or a hidden problem. It implies a recurrence after dormancy. In contrast, 爆发 (bàofā) describes a sudden, large-scale eruption (volcano, war, applause), while 突发 (tūfā) simply means 'occur suddenly' without the sense of a pre-existing condition re-emerging.
