发现 (fāxiàn) means to discover, find, or notice something that was hidden or unknown before. It is more active than 知道 (zhīdào 'to know a fact'), which simply means having information. Compared to 察觉 (chájué 'to sense/perceive'), 发现 emphasizes a concrete finding rather than subtle awareness.
