Definition
发福 is a euphemistic way to say 'gain weight', especially in middle age. It is a separable verb (离合词): the object 福 can separate from 发 when inserting aspects or measures, such as 发了福 ('have put on weight') or 发了不少福 ('have gained quite a bit of weight').
