Definition
吃亏 (chī kuī) means 'to suffer a loss or be at a disadvantage' in a broad sense — financial, social, or in a deal. It's more general than 亏损 (financial deficit) or 亏本 (losing capital in business), and different from 亏待 (mistreating someone) or 失利 (losing a competition). Note that 吃亏 is a separable verb: you can say 吃了亏 or 吃大亏.
