向上 (xiàng shàng) means 'to strive upward, to make progress' — it emphasizes personal improvement, ambition, and a positive attitude toward self-development. Unlike 提高 (tí gāo, to raise/increase something) or 进步 (jìn bù, to make progress in skill/level), 向上 is more about one's mindset and effort to better oneself, often used with 积极 (actively) or 努力 (hard). It is less about concrete results and more about the direction of striving.
