呻吟 (shēn yín) means 'to moan or groan' — a low, drawn-out sound from pain or illness, often involuntary. It's more intense and sustained than 哼 (hēng), which can be a quick grunt or snort, and unlike 呜咽 (wū yè 'to sob'), it has no crying or emotional distress.
