Definition
呼吸 (hū xī) means 'to breathe' as the whole cycle of inhaling and exhaling. 吸 (xī) is only the inhale part; 呼吸 covers both. Use 呼吸 for the general act of breathing, and 吸 when you specifically mean 'to inhale' or 'to suck in'.
