嘲弄 (cháo nòng) is a more formal and literary word for 'mock, ridicule', carrying a deliberate, contemptuous tone. It is stronger and more disdainful than 笑话 (xiào hua, 'make fun of') and far less playful than 调侃 (tiáo kǎn, 'tease playfully'). In everyday speech, 嘲笑 (cháo xiào) is the neutral, go-to term for mocking.
