国徽 (guó huī) is a national emblem or coat of arms — a symbolic design used on official buildings, documents, and currency. It is different from 国旗 (guó qí), which is the national flag (a piece of cloth flown on a pole). In everyday conversation, people talk about 'the flag' much more often than 'the emblem'.
