圣人 (shèng rén) is a term of supreme respect denoting a person of extraordinary wisdom and virtue. In Confucianism, it refers specifically to Confucius as the ultimate Sage (孔子). In post-Tang imperial China, the title was also applied to the emperor. In Buddhism, it encompasses enlightened beings such as Buddhas and bodhisattvas.
