宗旨 (zōng zhǐ) refers to the fundamental purpose or guiding principle of an organization, institution, or policy — it's more abstract and formal than 目的 (mù dì, general "purpose") or 目标 (mù biāo, concrete "goal/target"). Unlike the personal "intention" of 用意 (yòng yì) or "ambition" of 志向 (zhì xiàng), 宗旨 describes the core mission that an entity stands for.
