Definition
室 (shì) is mainly used as a suffix to name specific types of rooms (教室 'classroom', 卧室 'bedroom') or offices (办公室 'office', 研究室 'research office'). It is not a standalone noun like 屋子 (wū zi) for a general room. For larger organizational units, 部门 (bù mén) or 处 (chù) are more common; 室 often indicates a specialized subgroup.
