Definition
开工 (kāi gōng) means to start work on a construction or production project, such as a factory or engineering project. It is more specific to industrial or large-scale work than 开业 (kāi yè, opening a business) or 开场 (kāi chǎng, starting a performance). Unlike 动工 (dòng gōng, breaking ground), 开工 can also refer to starting production after construction. As a separable verb (离合词), it can be split: 开了工, 开不了工.
